6 Essential Foods Your Child Should Eat During Winter

Children are fussy eaters, especially toddlers. They can naturally sense foods that are healthy and don’t eat it, no matter how much you convince them. You always have to sneak food into their meals, and only mothers would know how difficult it is. When it comes to the winter season, you want your child to be all warm because winters can be harsh. Eating seasonal foods strengthen your child’s immunity as they are packed with vitamins and minerals.

Here are six essential foods that your child needs to eat during winter:

  1. Citrus fruits

The grocery store and farmer’s market is loaded with gooseberries, orange, and other citrus fruits. Gooseberry is the king of all citrus fruits. But most of the children refuse to eat it because of its taste. Well, I can give a solution to this problem. You can cut gooseberries into small pieces and soak it in honey for a day or two. All the goodness of the gooseberry would blend in with the honey, and the gooseberry pieces would shrink away. You can now add a little warm water (only slightly warm, just to dissolve the honey) to this honey-gooseberry extract mixture and serve to the kid as juice. Fruits like orange, sweet lime, etc. are also good but you need to be careful while offering those fruits to infants and toddlers as its skin can choke them.

  1. Sweet potato

Sweet potato tastes the best in winters. Also, sweet potato is a healthier choice than potatoes. They have a lot of dietary fiber and is an excellent source of vitamin A. Your child will love sweet potato; all you have to do is just sprinkle some salt and pepper over it. Sweet potatoes are an excellent choice for finger foods for messy toddlers.

  1. Green leafy vegetables

Winter is the season of green leafy vegetables. You will find the freshest kale, spinach, and lettuce in the market. But your toddler won’t understand it and fuss over eating them. As a superwoman, you have to hide it in smoothies, pasta, and lasagna.

  1. Oatmeal


Oatmeal is not a winter food since it is available all year round. But you have to keep your baby warm, and oatmeal is the best way to do that. It also contains dietary fibers and a whole lot of other nutrients. Avoid giving your child wheat until six months of age. You can provide multigrain oatmeal mix without wheat as well.

  1. Carrots


Carrots are the sweetest during winters, aren’t they? Most children love carrots mainly because of its color, and we keep telling them how good it is for their eyes. Carrots have beta-carotene, a potent antioxidant that strengthens the immune system and fastens growth. You can also make a carrot mash and add a little honey and nuts to it if your fussy toddler doesn’t like eating carrots. You can even wash it, cut it into french fry shaped pieces and give it to the kids.  

  1. Turkey

If you live in a country like the US, UK, or Canada where turkey is regularly eaten, do give your kids some meat. Turkey and chicken are the best for weaning your child to solid foods. If it is time to wean your baby around Thanksgiving, turkey is a perfect choice. Add some gravy on top of turkey meat pieces and your munchkin will love his first Thanksgiving.

Don’t give up if your child rejects specific food on the first try. It takes babies around ten trials to get used to a flavor or taste. They mostly refuse it because of the texture, so you can try switching things around and changing textures.
